Pit (ピット Pitto) is the main protagonist of the Kid Icarus series, first appearing in Kid Icarus for the Famicom Disk System in 1986 (1987 for the Nintendo Entertainment System), followed by an appearance in Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters for the Game Boy in 1991. Other than a handful of cameos in other Nintendo games, Pit did not make a major appearance again until the release of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, seventeen years after Of Myths and Monsters, in which he was one of the first newcomers shown and one of the starter characters.

Pit is Palutena's most loyal servant, as well as the captain of her army. He is sometimes erroneously referred to as "Kid Icarus" in reference to the English title of the series. Pit is always armed with his trusty bow and arrows and prefers ranged combat, though he has demonstrated a fair amount of melee capability.

Characteristics

Appearance

In earlier games, Pit appeared as a very young-looking, cherubic angel wearing a simple white chiton with a pair of sandals, and metal cuffs. He had short brown hair, and small white wings that are incapable of flight. In Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters and beyond, he dons a gold laurel crown. Since his reappearance in Brawl, he was given a major redesign by Masahiro Sakurai. Pit now looks to be about 13 years of age[2], with a height around 160 cm (5'3") tall[3]. Sakurai redesigned Pit as if he had been developed through his series, comparing Pit to Link from The Legend of Zelda series as a guide for Pit's current look, including the approval of Pit's creator[4]. The modern design has blue eyes and many tufts in Pit's hair including a single unruly cowlick. His chiton remains white, now decorated with red and gold hems with vine-like patterns. It is fastened on the shoulder by a single gold fibula with a red stone or glass embedded in it, along with a loose scarf. He wears the outfit with a brown belt and a gold triangular buckle. Pit also appears to wear a skin-tight navy undershirt and shorts beneath. The angel has a pair of brown and gold metal bracers on his wrists, a gold bracelet on his upper left arm, and another gold ring on his right thigh. Pit's sandals are brown, decorated with crossing beige bands and fuzzy white trims.

Personality

" I fight for all creatures living and breathing! I fight for all departed souls still hanging in limbo! But most of all, I fight for Lady Palutena, the goddess of light! And it's in all their names that I will crush you, Lord of the Underworld! I won't let you desecrate another soul! "

—Pit's final words to Hades.

Pit's various expressions from Uprising

Pit is generally a goodhearted and heroic character, possessing a strong sense of justice. He believes in protecting humanity and the heavens from those that seek their destruction. The angel is also very upbeat no matter what the situation, which certain characters, including both foe and ally, can find it a nuisance at times. Pit has a notable humorous side, and he likes to frequently banter, crack jokes, make outrageous puns, and constantly break the fourth wall. He has made references to other Nintendo games such as Dr. Mario, Metroid, Super Smash Bros., and Nintendogs.

His loyalty to Palutena is unmatched, as he's shown to take great pride in serving under the goddess. As a sign of respect and devotion, he always addresses her as "Lady Palutena". Pit even openly states the main reason he fights in the first place is because of her. Also, in many of his speeches towards the enemy, he always mentions fighting under Palutena's name. However, his absolute trust and dependence on the goddess of light has shown to be a double-edged sword, as it gives a boost to Pit's courage and morale, but these will all falter if she is not present.

Besides his loyalty to Palutena, Pit's substantial amount of compassion makes him stand out from the rest of the characters. He is one of the few to feel empathy for humans and hold an optimistic view on them. He believes humans are special in a way that they have "heart" unlike other living beings - they are the only ones to show faith and devotion towards the gods. Pit's great kindness seems to allow him to see the good in most people, even in those that have committed heinous acts. Despite Viridi's actions of trying to wipe out humanity, it is clear Pit does not view her a bad person as he held no ill will towards her. Pit appears to feel the same towards his dark counterpart even though Dark Pit made attempts to destroy him in the past. Pit even displayed some anger and grief for his long-time enemy, Medusa, when Hades brutally killed her off for her disobedience. The angel is also incredibly selfless, as he will go to great lengths to help or save others. One notable case is when he rescues Dark Pit from the clutches of the Chaos Kin by reactivating the already exhausted power of flight. Despite knowing the risks, Pit goes through with it, resulting in him almost getting killed by the heroic act. Pit's compassionate side does have its limits, as he has no qualms using lethal force when necessary.

Although not the smartest angel around, he is shown to be quite knowledgeable with video games, particularly from other Nintendo franchises. Even Viridi was impressed by his "gaming IQ", and called him a "video game historian". Pit possesses a large appetite, claiming he always goes for seconds and thirds. He seemingly eats almost anything regardless of where it comes from (such as the floor), but seems to have a preference for junk food. Overall, his mind never seems to be too far from food, even during battles. He is shown to be a devout lover of Hot Springs, which Palutena (and once, Viridi) will occasionally conjure up for him. Pit strongly follows the "angel's code of conduct" to the point he even refuses to remove his clothes when entering water. However, the truth behind this is because the angel is frugal and wants to save on laundry. Pit is also very strong-willed, which is displayed by his strongly deterministic attitude. This in turn appears to have given him a powerful and nearly-unbreakable spirit, as the Chariot Master claims he has a "deep reservoir of strength". Pit has a low tolerance for poor attitude, as he states to Pandora's nonchalant behavior that he can take anything but indifference.

Pit is childish, gullible and naive. He is unfortunately not the brightest either (but he can still have his moments). Pit openly claims he never learned how to read (but this could just be a joke the writers added for humor), and has trouble understanding complex vocabulary used by Palutena. Some characters even sarcastically insult his intelligence, and his inability to detect sarcasm makes things easier for others. Ironically, Pit can sometimes make sarcastic statements himself. Pit is also sometimes oversensitive, especially when someone brings up the topic regarding his inability to fly, or when someone insults his goddess. He can even come off slightly narcissistic at times, believing he is an attractive-looking person. However, he can become insecure when being compared to someone else with better looks. According to Palutena, Pit embarrasses easily, and Pit himself admits he gets stage fright. Despite his position as captain of an army, he seems to strongly prefer working alone (with the exception of Palutena), as Pit shows reluctance whenever someone offers help, and the angel states that he doesn't need his or her assistance. Regardless of Pit's quirky and sometimes immature behavior, Palutena and the centurions view him as a respectable servant and captain.

However, the existence of Dark Pit may indicate Pit is not always as kind and friendly as he appears.

Abilities

Despite being a flightless angel, Pit is still a skilled and versatile fighter. Pit is commonly described to be the most powerful warrior of Palutena's Army. He regularly fights entire armies and towering monsters single-handedly. He has defeated other skilled warriors such as Phosphora and Magnus, and powerful gods like Medusa and Hades. Viridi even states he is destructive as a hundred Reset Bombs, and Magnus compliments he's the only member of his own army to be able to pull his own weight. Even the mighty Hades views Pit as a worthy opponent.

Pit originally started out as an archer that mainly specialized in using the bow, but over the years he has become more experienced with using various weapons like the Blade, Claws, Cannon, and Staff. The angel has no actual magical powers of his own, but he can utilize abilities known as Powers which are granted by Palutena. Although Pit has access to numerous weapon classes, he has preference for bows, specifically the Palutena Bow, which is also his signature weapon. Apart from the various weapons he wields, Pit is also skilled in driving the various vehicles of the gods such as Exo Tanks, Cherubots, Aether Rings, and even the legendary Lightning Chariot. Despite having seen some of these vehicles only once, Pit quickly learns to master each of them, showing he is a fast learner.

Even though Pit has a childish appearance, he seems to possess great physical strength, and is capable of utilizing massive weapons like the Arm, Clubs or Cannons. Pit has a surprisingly high level of endurance, having survived injuries that would have proved fatal to other beings. Over the course of the game, Pit has been burned, electrocuted, frozen, fallen from the sky on multiple occasions, and even had his wings burned off and left near death (although this required help from the Rewind Spring to heal). Pit engaged the Chaos Kin in an aerial dogfight, fighting his way through thirteen waves of replicated enemies from every faction, fought the Chaos Kin again on foot and showed no signs of tiring.

Appearances

Kid Icarus

Pit as he appears in Kid Icarus

Cheering Pit.gif

At the beginning of the first game, Pit began as a young angel boy, trapped in the Underworld. Palutena, the Goddess of Light, had been imprisoned, so she entrusted Pit with a magical Bow and the duty of gathering the Three Sacred Treasures, defeating the Goddess of Darkness, Medusa, and saving Angel Land. Pit must journey through the Underworld, Overworld, Skyworld, and finally, the Palace in the Sky in order to gather the Three Sacred Treasures and free Palutena.

Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters

Pit as he appears in Of Myths and Monsters

In Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters, Pit is charged with training for the defense of Angel Land, after Palutena foresees an invasion of demons led by a monster called Orcos. The training involves the Three Sacred Treasures, which Pit must unite. However, because of a dire emergency, Palutena had entrusted the Three Sacred Treasures to the fortress guardians. To prevent Orcos's invasion, Pit must once again obtain the Three Sacred Treasures.

Kid Icarus: Uprising

Single Player

In Kid Icarus: Uprising, Pit returns as the main character of the story, using his updated look from Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Unlike his previous adventures, he gains a variety of weapons to choose from, along with his usual Bow and the Three Sacred Treasures. He can no longer jump on command, but he gains the Power of Flight with the help of Palutena. He can also use various powers that Pit can use offensively or boost some of his stats. Due to the 3D environment of Kid Icarus: Uprising, Pit is no longer limited to left and right movements, now capable of running around in a full 3D space. However, running for too long can cause him to get tired and will need to rest for a moment.

Pit's goal is to defeat Medusa, who was somehow revived from their first encounter. As Palutena guides him, Pit meets with many other gods and goddesses, as well as villains, both new and old. Once Medusa is defeated, Pit's goal changes to defeat Hades, who is revealed to be the one who revived Medusa. Pit also gains a sort of ally in the Goddess of Nature, Viridi, despite their initial meeting.

At the end of Chapter 5, Pit gains a sort of rival with his corrupted doppelganger, Dark Pit. While the two are shown to be on the same side at first, both taking down Pandora, Dark Pit quickly turns on Pit and uses Pandora's powers to be able to fly on his own. Throughout the adventure, Dark Pit and Pit meet many times, Dark Pit switching between a boss and an ally. At the end of Chapter 21, Dark Pit is dragged down by the Chaos Kin and Pit jumps to save him, using what is left of the Power of Flight and causing his wings to burn up. While Pit is unconscious, Dark Pit becomes playable and goes to revive Pit at the Rewind Spring.

Three years after the Aurum invasion, Pit finds himself turned into a ring. As a ring, Pit finds he can control anyone who puts it on, which ends up being a young girl, a dog, and a friend he met earlier, Magnus. While in this state, Pit finds his body attacking the town. Upon defeating his body and Magnus putting the Ring of Chaos on it, Pit regains control of his body, but soon learns Palutena has fallen under the control of the Chaos Kin.

During a battle with Hades, Pit loses the Three Sacred Treasures. Palutena sends Pit to the god who created them, Dyntos, who challenges Pit to pass three trials, involving Pit's proving himself by defeating recreations of former enemies and bosses along with the new weapon itself. Pit triumphs and claims the Great Sacred Treasure, and uses it to confront Hades once more, and manages to weaken the god. Unfortunately, Hades destroys the Great Sacred Treasure and prepares an attack that will kill Pit, but a revived Medusa shows up and stops him before he destroys her. Palutena instructs Pit to take the cannon of the Great Sacred Treasure and focuses her power to charge it as Viridi gives Pit the Power of Flight. Once the charge is complete, Pit fires it and defeats Hades, bringing the war to an end. Pit then flies over the nearby land to check on its state, reflecting on the battle. While he is doing so, Dark Pit joins him, also using the Power of Flight, and Pit heads to follow him toward the horizon before flying off on his own higher into the heavens as the credits roll.

Multiplayer

Pit is also playable in Together Mode, but only in Light vs Dark. He will appear when the last Fighter on the Light Team is defeated when the life gauge depletes.

Pit as he appears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Pit is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and is available as one of the starter characters. He was one of the first newcomers announced at E3 2006.

His special attacks, other than his side special, are inspired by the Three Sacred Treasures. His specials are the Palutena's Arrow, Angel Ring, Wings of Pegasus, and the Mirror Shield. After obtaining the power of the Smash Ball, Pit can use his Final Smash, Palutena's Army, to call upon a swarm of Centurions to attack his opponents. His main weapon is called the "Sacred Bow of Palutena" and has the added new feature of being able to split into dual swords (a trait that would carry on to its appearance in Uprising). Pit uses both swords and bow for his aerial, standard, and smash attacks, changing the weapon between three different forms to attack. The bow is also used as the symbol as representation for the Kid Icarus series.

Pit is one of three characters possessing wings, so he is capable of gliding. The other two are Meta Knight and Charizard.

This is also the first game in which Pit has a speaking voice. In the Japanese version, he is voiced by Minami Takayama, while in the English version he is voiced by Lani Minella.

Role in the Subspace Emissary

In the Subspace Emissary, Pit is first seen watching Mario and Kirby battling on a stadium through a magical pool in Skyworld. When he sees the stadium get engulfed by Subspace, Palutena appears and sends him to defeat the Subspace army, giving him his bow. Pit soon meets Mario, who was knocked out of the stadium by Petey Piranha, the act of which turned him into a trophy before he landed in the Sea of Clouds near Skyworld. Pit and Mario quickly team up and set out to defeat the Subspace army. They eventually form a larger party of fighters with Link, Yoshi and Kirby, which joins up with other characters later in the story.

Eventually, all the characters, with the exception of Luigi, Ness, and King Dedede join up and invade the Subspace, only to get turned into trophies by Tabuu. However, he and most of the others are rescued by King Dedede, Luigi, and Ness, who had been absent in the invasion. Pit takes part in the final battle against Tabuu with all the other characters.

Pit as he appears in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U

Pit returns in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U as a starter veteran. He was the first Brawl-originated veteran to be announced back in E3 2013. His slightly updated appearance and new moves are inspired by Kid Icarus: Uprising. He now has the Upperdash Arm, Guardian Orbitars, and Power of Flight as his new specials. Pit also gained a new Final Smash, which is now the Three Sacred Treasures. However, he lost the ability to glide, as the technique has been removed from the games.

If a player uses Pit's down taunt on the Palutena's Temple stage in the Wii U version, it will activate Palutena's Guidance.

Antony Del Rio, who portrayed Pit in Kid Icarus: Uprising returned to voice him in the English version of the game, but was not credited. In the Japanese version, Minami Takayama reprises as Pit.

Trophy Descriptions

Pit (3DS/Wii U)
NA Version: Pit is the captain of Palutena's royal guard. Despite having wings on his back, Pit needs the Power of Flight from Palutena in order to truly fly. In Smash Bros., he can still get more air than most, with four jumps and a special move that boosts him higher. He has a new reflect move—it protects both sides!

PAL Version: Despite being an angel with wings and all that jazz, Pit can't fly without a little bit of help from his favourite goddess, Palutena. In this game, he's good at both close and ranged combat, and can even deflect projectiles. On top of that, with a high-flying up special and the ability to jump four times in mid-air. He's also got great recovery skills.

Pit (Alt.) (3DS/Wii U)
NA Version: Pit's side special Upperdash Arm delivers an uppercut so strong, it can send foes flying for a KO. If you miss and fall off the stage, Pit's up special can bring him soaring back. Another of Pit's specials is Palutena Bow, which fires arrows Pit can aim even after they've left the bow.

PAL Version: Pit's Upperdash Arm special launches him forwards to strike with an uppercut. It's so powerful, it can deliver an instant KO! If you accidentally dash off the stage with it, one of his up special will get you back on easily. His Palutena Bow special can be charged up, shot straight up into the air, and you can even guide the arrows mid-flight!

Three Sacred Treasures (Wii U)
NA Version: The Arrow of Light, the Wings of Pegasus, and the Mirror Shield—three legendary artifacts that Pit once used to defeat the evil Medusa. When you activate Pit's Final Smash, he can use them in this game too! After firing a barrage of different bow attacks, his final shot will cause powerful light pillars to rain down on the battlefield.

PAL Version: The Arrow of Light, the Wings of Pegasus and the Mirror Shield - three legendary artifacts that Pit once used to defeat the evil Medusa. And when you activate his Final Smash, he can use them in this game too! After firing a medley of different bow attacks, his final shot makes powerful light pillars rain down on the battlefield.

Pit (Eggplant) (3DS)
NA Version: Let's squash a misconception right now—there is nothing worse than being turned into an eggplant. Just lettuce tell you, being hit by an eggplant bomb is humiliating. It leafs you without without mushroom to manuever and also makes you a laughing stalk of your friends.

PAL Version: Maybe you think there's something worse than being turned into an eggplant, but we're going to squash that misconception right now. Lettuce tell you, being hit by an eggplant bomb is awful. Not only does it leave you without mushroom to manoeuvre, but it makes you a giant laughing stalk as well. (We're not sorry.)

Pit as he appears in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Pit returns in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, resembling and acting similarly for the most part like he does in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. He has a brand new Final Smash in which he summons the Lightning Chariot to ram other fighters. For the first time in the series, Pit is an unlockable character. Pit is designated as fighter #28.

Like before, if a human player presses Pit's down taunt rapidly in Palutena's Temple, he will activate Palutena's Guidance. He has brand new dialogue for all The Legend of Zelda characters (except Toon Link), Ike, Robin, the DLC fighters from Super Smash Bros. 4, previously cut characters, and the Ultimate newcomers.

Antony Del Rio reprises his role as Pit in the English version of the game, but like the previous installment, he is not credited. Minami Takayama returned to voice Pit in the Japanese version. The in-battle voice clips in both languages primarily consist of reused audio from Super Smash Bros. 4.

Unlocking Methods

  • Awaken his fallen spirit in Adventure Mode: World of Light. Pit's spirit can be found at the end of the Temple of Light sub-area, guarding a magical crystal that creates a light barrier between a crevasse that prevents the fighters from moving forward to the eastern part of the main map.
  • Complete Classic Mode with Wii Fit Trainer. Pit is the third character unlocked after completing Samus's Classic Mode.
  • Play sufficient Vs. Matches, which causes Pit to appear as the fourth Challenger in line.

Role in World of Light

Pit, alongside Zelda and Marth, at the beginning of the World of Light.

In the opening cutscene, Pit can be seen standing on a seaside cliff close to Mario, Link, and King K. Rool. All the fighters appear to have been summoned to battle the mysterious entity, Galeem, the Lord of Light. The angel attempts to boost the morale of his comrades by claiming, "We can do this, I know we will!". Despite his initial confidence, Pit is later depicted fleeing from Galeem's devastating attack along with Dark Pit, while being granted the Power of Flight by Palutena. After Palutena's defeat, the two angels lose their flight then are instantly disintegrated by Galeem's light beams, transforming them into spirits. Along with the rest of the fighters (except Kirby), Galeem creates a false copy of Pit to do his bidding.

Other Appearances

Captain N: The Game Master

Pit, known as "Kid Icarus" in Captain N.

Pit appears as one of the main characters in the cartoon, Captain N: The Game Master. Here, he was referred to as "Kid Icarus" and, after initial suspicion, became Kevin's loyal sidekick next to Duke. He was voiced by Alessandro Juniali. Pit is drawn with a comically larger head (with a massive cowlick) in comparison to the rest of his body and is constantly in flight, as though he already possessed the Wings of Pegasus. He has a tendency to append the catchphrase "-icus" to words (and sometimes "maximus" for large things) and speaks as a young teenager just hitting puberty. No longer satisfied with normally deadly arrows, Pit has a large selection of different projectiles in his quiver with a large variety of functions, and he always seems to have the right one for the job (ranging from saw-bladed arrows to pizza arrows); sometimes, however, he pulls the wrong arrow and simply must make do with whatever he drew. One episode was centered on the plot of Kid Icarus, with the team trying to collect the Three Sacred Treasures. Kid Icarus came from the "Mount Icarus" realm.

Tetris

Tetris Pit.gif

Pit appeared in the official Nintendo version of Tetris, as an instrument player alongside several of Nintendo's other characters. In this appearance, he was depicted playing a violin or viola in the ending. This may be a pun on his choice of weapon, as the tool used for playing a stringed instrument is also called a bow.

In this feature, he battles Thanatos and his Underworld forces to prevent them from attacking a human town using a stolen Trojan Horse. In Medusa's Revenge, a small bit about Pit's back story 25 years ago is shown, and later his confrontation with Medusa in Uprising. In Palutena's Revolting Dinner, Pit is tasked to bring tomatoes for Palutena's "vegetable surprise", but a problem caused by his goddess later forces him to fight a group of sentient vegetable monsters.

Trivia

Adult Pit in the best ending of Kid Icarus. Note: This scene was added only in the English localization.

  • There are no angels in Greek mythology, but there is one archer with wings; Pit bears a very striking resemblance to Eros (also known as Cupid in Roman mythology), the god who would inspire love by shooting people with arrows. In popular culture, Eros/Cupid is often depicted as having arrowheads shaped and colored like hearts due to his love motif, and some of Pit's art and his trophy from Super Smash Bros. Melee depict his arrowheads as looking like hearts.
    • Pit's own name seems to be derived from Cupid himself, particularly from the pid part. There is evidence to this as seen in the Japanese version of Uprising as shown in Chapter 11, Viridi mentions that Pit's name (which is ピット Pitto in Japan) is unoriginal because he resembles Cupid (キューピット Kyūpitto).
  • Pit also draws inspiration from Icarus, the figure for whom the series is named. At the end of Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters, Pit flies up toward the sun, and his wings fall off. This alludes to the story of Icarus, whose wax-and-feather wings allowed him to fly, but flew too close to the sun, causing the wax holding the wings together to fall off and plummet to his death. A similar allusion is made in Uprising, when Palutena notes that the power of flight can only sustain Pit for five minutes before his wings burn up, causing him to fall, and he must reach his destination before that happens.
  • Pit also appears to draw inspiration from the legendary Greek hero, Perseus, who was famous for slaying Medusa with the help of Athena.
  • In Super Smash Bros. Melee, Pit appears as a trophy, with the words "Will he ever fight again?" imprinted on it, which could be a foreshadowing of his eventual inclusion in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
  • A romantic interest between Palutena and Pit was implied in the best ending in the original Kid Icarus. While this is not touched upon as much in Uprising, she and Pit are shown to be incredibly close and Palutena is quite protective of him. However, it should be noted that this ending was not in the original Japanese version of Kid Icarus, and was only in the English version, making it possibly not canon.
  • Pit appears to be ambidextrous as he is shown to be capable of using weapons skillfully with either hand. However, he is mainly depicted to be left-handed in the classic Kid Icarus games (as shown in his artwork) and in his Super Smash Bros. appearances (including his Melee trophy), while he is mainly right-handed in Uprising.
